Early 2015, AREVA and Gamesa finalised the creation of Adwen, a 50/50 joint venture dedicated to offshore wind, in order to become one of the leading players in the global offshore wind market and contribute to the development of this growing sector. The joint-venture is responsible for the design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and services of offshore wind turbines. Combining both Gamesa and AREVA wind expertise and extensive track-record, Adwen is ideally positioned to become a leading player in the offshore wind segment, with a 2.8 GW project pipeline and the objective of garnering a market share of close to 20% in Europe by 2020.
The offshore market represents one of the most promising areas for the development of renewable energies over the next decade, particularly in countries with long coastline like India.
India’s 7,600 km long coastline spurred interest in offshore wind resources, and the government is now defining a roadmap for further development for offshore wind development.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energies and the Centre for Wind Energy Technology (CWET) are leading research on offshore wind opportunity. The assessment of offshore wind resources started in 2012, and the government is now working on deploying a roadmap for offshore wind power development in the country.
