Erwan Hinault, Chairman & Managing Director of AREVA India, guest speaker for NLAI

On March 1st 2014 was held the Third Annual Meet of the Nuclear Law Association India (NLAI), in the Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi, around the topic of “Nuclear Energy and Indian Society: Public Engagement, Risk Assessment and Legal Framework”.
NLAI was set up in 2011 as the India chapter of the International Nuclear Law Association. It seeks to promote knowledge sharing and influence policy formulations through seminars, research, publications pertaining to legal issues relating to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Erwan Hinault, Chairman & Managing Director of AREVA India, participated as a guest speaker in a panel on the topic of “Values, Attitudes and Acceptability: Lessons from other countries”. He shared with the audience the French perspective and experience on various subjects, including nuclear energy choices after Fukushima, public engagement, acceptance and regulatory process, social dimensions of nuclear power, and the management of high-level waste. He also revealed that ever since France decided to make nuclear energy the pillar of its energy mix in the 1960s, the majority of French public opinion has been in favour of nuclear power, for it has brought energy independence and cheap electricity tariff in the country.
The event was attended by professionals of the legal fraternity, as well as the Atomic Energy Regulatorty Board (AERB), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re), key private players, and various research institutes and think-tanks. Notably, Ambassador Rakesh Sood, Primer Minister's Special Envoy for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, and Shri S.A. Bhardway, former NPCIL Technical Director, respectively delivered the presidential and inaugural addresses.
