With a targeted availability of 92% and the ability to perform maintenance without shutting down the plant, these costs are reduced even further. Moreover, the EPR™ does not require any more staff than current-generation reactors.

BETTER FUEL MANAGEMENT, HIGHER OUTPUT
The axial economizer within the EPR™ reactor’s steam generator helps it achieve 37% thermal efficiency, surpassing that of previous generation plants, generally around 33%. This thermal efficiency allows for up to 15% savings on natural uranium (natU) per MWh produced, compared with other reactors.
In addition, 2 factors are combined to enable the EPR™ reactor to provide higher output per kilogram of uranium.
- First, the neutron reflector within the reactor pressure vessel ensures that fewer neutrons escape the core.
- Secondly, the core’s large size results in lower power density, rendering it easier to manage with less need to use neutron absorbers to regulate the chain reaction.
